Math Games

Math games are a fun way to learn addition and subtraction facts! For the following games you will need a regular deck of cards with all the Jacks, Kings, Queens and Jokers taken out. Aces count as ONE.

Game 1
Addition War
A game for two players.

After removing the face cards give half the cards to yourself and half to the person you are playing against. Next each player places their cards in a pile in front of them. Players face each other. Next each player flips over a card without looking at it in advance. The first player to call out the sum of the 2 cards gets to take the cards. In the following example the first player to say "NINE" gets the cards.

Continue playing until all the cards have been played. The person with the most cards wins!

Game 2
The Number Family Game
A game for three players.

After removing the face cards give half the cards to PLAYER 1 and half to PLAYER 2. A third person called the "JUDGE" is needed to assist the 2 players. Next each player places their cards in a pile in front of them. Players face each other. Next each player picks up a card without looking at it and puts it on their forehead so only the other player and the judge can see it. Next the "JUDGE" calls out the sum of the numbers on the two cards. In the example below that would be "NINE".

Now just like magic each player should be able to call out the value of the card they are holding on their forehead. Keep playing until all the cards are gone. The player with the most cards wins!
